P2PFISY 2025: Global Experts Unite at Central Bank of Uruguay to Advance Digital Finance

The 11th edition of the P2PFISY Workshop took place in Montevideo at the Central Bank of Uruguay, in collaboration with the Faculty of Economic Sciences and Administration (FCEA), University of the Republic. The event gathered experts, policymakers, and academics from around the world for two days of engaging discussions on decentralised digital technologies and their impact on finance in Latin America and globally.

This year’s programme was rich and varied, featuring keynote speeches, paper presentations, invited talks, and dynamic panels. Topics ranged from crypto regulation and the tokenisation of real world assets, to central bank digital currencies, stablecoins, sustainable finance, digital identity systems, cross border interoperability, and the role of AI in digital asset markets.

Members of the Exponential Science team participated throughout the workshop. Exponential Science Executive Chairman, Prof. Paolo Tasca, opened the workshop with insights on regulatory frameworks and the future of digital assets, while R&D Director Marco Javarone engaged in conversations on tokenisation and market design.

Senior Research Fellow Walter Hernandez shared insights on stablecoins and payment systems, while Research Fellow Abylay Satybaldy contributed to debates on digital identity and financial inclusion. Nikhil Vadgama, Exponential Science Director, hosted a fireside chat with Betsabe Botaitis, CFO and Treasurer at Hedera. These contributions highlighted the multidisciplinary scope of the workshop and the areas for further development in Latin America and across the world.

One of the highlights of the agenda was a panel discussion titled ‘Stablecoins, Security Tokens and CBDCs: Redefining Financial Systems in Latin America’ which featured contributions from ​​Nicolás de Marco from BCU, Roberto Silva, President of CNV Argentina, Juan Carlos Reyes, President of the Digital Assets Commission of El Salvador, Mauricio Villafuerte, Advisor to the International Monetary Fund, Tristan Thoma, Executive Director of Impera Strategy, and moderated by Flavia Fernández a Professor form FCEA.

The workshop concluded with a clear sense of momentum. Across sessions, there was consensus on the importance of fostering responsible innovation, deepening financial inclusion, and ensuring sustainability in digital finance. Collaboration between academics, industry, and regulators emerged as a central theme, underscoring the collective effort required to shape effective policy and research agendas.

On the back of a successful P2PFISY 2025, Exponential Science team is looking forward to building on the ideas and partnerships that took root in Montevideo.
